'The Black Hole' by Phil Sampson and Olly Williams- Short Film Research- Imogen Evans

About the Film (Director, Release date, Overall plot and Issues):

The short film is 3 minutes long and was created by Phil Sampson and Olly Williams. It was released in 2008. I came across this short film when looking for short films on Vimeo and rediscovered it again on YouTube. The shorts film explores greed and temptation through the use of a black hole idea and getting what you desire.
It is powerful as it shows the transition of how greed can take over someone's perspective and motives.

Concepts:
I will be applying 3 media concepts to this short film. I will apply
  • Media Language
  • Narrative
  • Representative
Each concept will be colour coded to make it easier to see where I have applied each concept to the short film.

The short film starts with a tracking shot which allows the audience to see what the location of the film is like, it is particularly dull grey office where a man is used a copier. His body language represents that he is very bored by slouching, his shirt is rolled up and shirt top bottom undone to show laziness.

By having the lighting of the film as grey it represents the main characters life and perspective to the world a dull which is also shown by him being in an office late at night.
Long shots and mid shots are mainly used to show facial expressions and how the character positions himself around the office, by the way he slouches it represents that he is a dull man which can lead to his motives of using the back hole.
When he first discovers the black hole his facial expression are confused, his eyes stare at the black hole to represent his feelings towards it, emphasising his character. He is shown to be scared of it more than when he embraces it.
Later in the short film his personality becomes more corrupt and evil by the greed so he has cunning facial expressions. He represents a villain.
He has a snarled grin and sketchy eyes which constantly move around the room as an act of being nervous or not wanting anyone to catch him in the act. This represents what greed and power does to you, this boring man has been able to transform himself into a boring person to a cunning, greedy person.

Narrative is used to show the transformation of someone's life when under the influence of greed. In The Black Hole it possesses someone's mind to change how they think and destroy their motives. Narrative emphasises the man's way of being from development of a chocolate bar to stealing the money.

  1. I know from Alex's email that you were having issues with blogger on Friday. There appears to be a huge space above, and the analysis is incomplete - if this is related to the blogger issue, can you see whether you have any more luck at home? If it's not a blog issue (or when it's resolved), get the rest of this done asap.
